³⁹ Now when Moses spoke ^(A)these words to all the sons of Israel, ^(B)the people mourned greatly. ⁴⁰ In the morning, however, they got up early and went up to the ^[a]ridge of the hill country, saying, “^(C)Here we are; and we will go up to the place which the Lord has ^[b]promised, for ^[c]we have sinned.” ⁴¹ But Moses said, “^(D)Why then are you ^(E)violating the ^[d]command of the Lord, when doing so will not succeed?
